Fall is one of my favorite times of the year! What better way to celebrate than to read books about pumpkins! Preschoolers and kindergarteners love pumpkins, and there are so many great activities you can do with them in the classroom. I have hand-picked these pumpkin books for little learners to enhance this fun season with your students. Fiction Titles
The first pumpkin book is called Five Little Pumpkins. Your little learners will love this book because it goes along with the song and is so fun to read. All of my students catch on quickly with the rhyme and want to read it again and again. There are tons of YouTube videos that play the song! This is a great way to incorporate music into your day!
Next up, Sixteen Runaway Pumpkins! Your students will love this silly book that is full of lots of action! The illustrations are cute and the author does a great job writing the book for little learners. Plus, sneak in a math lesson about doubling numbers. Win-win! 
Duck & Goose Find a Pumpkin is a cute read that will captivate your kiddos. They will get to go on a pumpkin hunt with Duck and Goose. They look everywhere but can’t seem to find a pumpkin! Will they find one in the apple tree or the hollow log? Read the story to find out!
It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse! My kiddos LOVE this simple book! Written by the author of all the Give a… books, she does a wonderful job at writing to preschool and kindergarten levels. This book will have your students wondering where the missing pumpkin went!
Little Boo is a fun little book about a seed that wants to be scary! He tries to scare different things throughout the seasons, but he just isn’t scary. The wind tells him to be patient but that is so hard! Will he ever be scary?
There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves! This great read is so fun and the kids always love these books. There is a whole series if you really enjoy these Old Lady books. She swallows a bunch of fall things and out pops a scarecrow!
Pete the Cat Five Little Pumpkins is a silly version of the classic Five Little Pumpkins book. Pete the Cat is always a crowd-pleaser in preschool and kindergarten rooms, and this one won’t disappoint! Rhyming and singing are great things to do in your room and this book has both!
Pumpkin Countdown is the next title on my pumpkin books for little learner list and it is a wonderful story! They start with 20 name tags and countdown until there is just 1 last pumpkin song. All the things in between are fall-themed and perfect for a trip to the pumpkin patch.
Pumpkin Eye is a fun little tale about Halloween night. It is just the right amount of spookiness for little learners, who will be captivated until the end. The text is simple and rhyming and the illustrations are fun for preschoolers and kindergarteners.
Pumpkin Hill is a cute little book about some seeds that turn into a bunch of rolly polly pumpkins that tumble all through town! They cause all kinds of mayhem and wake up the town. Your little learners will think this book is silly and will giggle the whole time. 
Pumpkin Jack is an interesting read about a boy’s jack-o-lantern that he names Jack. As Jack sits outside through the seasons, Tim watches him change. Jack then turns into a sprout and more pumpkins grow. This book shows kids the life cycle of a pumpkin with a little narrative mixed in.
Next up, Pumpkin Pumpkin. This book is great for little learners to see that they can save seeds and have more pumpkins next year. The little boy gets to carve a jack-o-lantern and saves some seeds. He then plants them next year and watches his new pumpkins grow.
Pumpkin Soup is a wonderful addition to your classroom library. It teaches about friendship, which can be a hard thing to teach about in preschool and kindergarten. There is a recipe for yummy pumpkin soup in the back. The illustrations are great and your students will enjoy this read.
Splat the Cat and the Pumpkin-Picking Plan is a fun story featuring Splat the Cat and Seymour the Mouse. They have a plan to pick the biggest pumpkin ever! Will they find it? Read the story to find out!
The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin is a must-read for preschoolers and kindergarteners! It teaches about selfishness, bullying, believing in yourself, and many other important character themes. Some versions come with a CD that features a read-aloud version and some songs that accompany the story. Your little learners will love the songs and lessons learned from this book.
The Bumpy Little Pumpkin is a story about a little girl and the pumpkin she wants to carve. This book teaches about differences in families and how it is okay to be unique.
The Itsy Bitsy Pumpkin is a twist on the Itsy Bitsy Spider. Your students will enjoy this book and want you to read it over and over again.
The last book on the fiction is called The Runaway Pumpkin. It is about a little pumpkin off on an adventure. Your little learners will sit still for this one! The pictures are wonderful and the story is engaging!
Nonfiction Titles
It’s Pumpkin Time! Your students will learn about the process of planting a pumpkin patch and waiting for the seed to sprout and grow into a pumpkin. This book shows where pumpkins actually come from, a farm, not the grocery store. You will join a set of siblings as they plant their own pumpkin patch and wait and wait for it to grow!
A Day at the Pumpkin Patch is a great nonfiction read if you have students that haven’t been to a pumpkin patch. It shows all the fun things you can do there. I love the real-life photos that are included in the book. They are great to help your students make text connections with themselves and the world around them.
From Seed to Pumpkin is another great read to teach kids about the life cycle and growing process of a pumpkin. This science book does a great job explaining the process and includes some science ideas in the back. It even includes a recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds!
How Big Could Your Pumpkin Grow? This is such a fun book and your little learners will be amazed at how big pumpkins can grow! This book is full of information about famous landforms around the United States and does a wonderful job talking about different sizes! This book paves the way to incorporate math into your reading time!
How Many Seeds In a Pumpkin? This is another great science book that would lend itself to a fun experiment afterward! I have brought in different sized pumpkins, cut them open, and counted the seeds we found. The kids loved it! This book does a wonderful job including skills like skip counting and estimation for some added math benefits.
Pumpkin Circle is the perfect addition to a science unit on a pumpkin’s life cycle. It shows the full circle from seed to pumpkin to seed again. The photos are bright and show all the colors of fall. The words are at just the right level for a little scientist.
Pumpkins is a great nonfiction book that has tons of facts about pumpkins and the fall season. It is perfect for little learners because of the simple text and great photographs.
Another book called Pumpkins! This one is another great nonfiction text that will teach your little learners about pumpkins and fall. The pictures are wonderful and bright! The book isn’t too long so your students should be able to stay engaged throughout the whole story.
Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie is a book that your littles will love to read. It celebrates all the many uses of pumpkins from decorations to yummy treats. The photographs are great and perfect for little learners.
Watch a Pumpkin Grow is the last title on the nonfiction list. It is a nice book about the life cycle of a pumpkin. The vocabulary is the perfect level for early readers. The pictures are bright and show all the steps of a growing pumpkin.
There are 28 books all about pumpkins that will make your fall unit a hit this year. Your little learners will learn all about the pumpkin life cycle and the many uses of pumpkins during the fall season. You now need to complete your pumpkin theme with these fall-themed centers for little learners.
