Letter formation and handwriting can be fun and interactive! In this post, you will find 26 different ways to make letters without doing a worksheet.
By providing students with materials they can create or write letters with, they will be excited to make letters! Isn’t that what we really want: for kids to be excited about learning their letters?
Each morning for the last 26 days of school in my preschool class, students came in and practiced one letter in their Letter Book. I put out all the Letter Books on a table. The red basket was a place for students to put their books after they completed their letter.
On the table, I would have out a sample letter page to help students know how to make the letter that day. I also placed on the table any materials they would need to make their letters.
My 3- and 4-year-old students had letter books with only uppercase letters. My pre-k students had letter books with both uppercase and lowercase letters. You can purchase Letter Books by clicking HERE.
Once students had done a few letters in their books, they gained confidence. They got excited to then decide on how we would make the next letter. Their ideas were fun and the best part was it was the students’ ideas, not mine! They took charge of their learning!
Now the fun part…how we made each letter!
Just add some paint to the glue to make it the color you want.
It was a ton of fun! Some other ideas for making collage letters are use cut newspaper, stickers, feathers, sticks or foam. When students collage a letter, I would have them trace the letter with glue then add the collage material. This way they were still getting the letter formation practice in! You can also paint letters with various brushes, sticks, or other items.
To encourage conversation about the sound the letter makes, put out a basket of items that begin with that sound.
