Blocks is one of my favorite centers and always a favorite for my students. The blocks center is such an important center in preschool, pre-k and kindergarten classrooms. The kids LOVE it and lots of learning can take place there!
Blocks and manipulatives gives students the opportunity to be creative, problem solve, develop math concepts, develop eye/hand coordination, develop language skills, develop fine motor (if the blocks are small) and develop inquiry skills.
Do ever have those kids that get to the blocks center and don’t know what to build? “I Can” anchor charts and books helps give students ideas of what they can build.
Do they have to build something on the chart or in the book? Not at all! I always let students build ANYTHING they want no matter what theme we are doing in my classroom.
At the beginning of the year, I introduce each center. When I introduce the blocks center, we brainstorm all the different things we can build. I glue the cards to the chart as they tell me their ideas! This chart will be posted in my blocks center all year long for students to use a reference.
Mini I Can Build books are prefect to put in your small block tubs! These are helpful to use with those early finishers, during indoor recess, as a science center, as a STEM center and as a math center.
At the beginning of the school year, I hang the book pages on my bulletin board in my blocks center. Once we start a theme they come off the wall, and I make them into a book. Students can use the I Can Build book all year long as a reference in the blocks center.
