Make winter oobleck in your classroom! It’s a fun sensory experience for little learners because it changes as you play with it. Sometimes it feels like a solid, then it slowly melts in your hand or through your fingering changing into a liquid. Students can explore two properties of matter (liquid, solid) in an age-appropriate way!
Oobleck Recipe
-2 part corn starch (ex: 1 cup)
-1 part water (ex: 1/2 cup)
-mix together which can be tricky
-add in fun mix-ins like foam beads, winter sprinkles, and/or glitter one at at time, mixing each time after you add in something new
You want to be able to make a snowball with it, then it should melt in your hand! If it’s too watery, sprinkle in more corn starch until you reach the desired thickness. If it’s too chunky, mix in a bit more water.
Clean-Up Tips and Tricks
Oobleck can be super messy. To help with clean up, always place it on a tray when the students play with it. Do yourself a huge favor, and let it dry completely before you clean it up. Simply put the trays aside once students are done playing and clean up the next day. Why? You may wonder…because once it’s dry you can hit the tray on the side of the trash can, the mixture cracks and falls right off the tray!
