Halloween
Candy Corn Letters Say It, Make It! Students can build letters with candy corn for an engaging and festive way to practice letter formation. If you don’t want to use real candy use candy corn mini erasers or manipulatives.
Ghost LettersSensory Writing Tray! Make a ghostly sensory bin with salt, glitter, and googly eyes! Students will have so much fun writing letters in the spooky salt tray (aka a pencil box). They can use their finger or a pom pom to write in the spooky salt then trace the letter on the worksheet.
Thanksgiving
Turkey Letters Spin and Write! Students can draw a letter card out of the feather sensory bin. They will spin the spinner and find out what writing utensil they will use to write the letter on the worksheet. Make a spinner with a paperclip and a pencil or a clear spinner cover.
Pumpkin Pie Letters! Trace the letters with a Q-tip dipped in paint after little learners draw a card. Students will still be working on pencil grasp and writing letters but it is more engaging when you a Q-tip with paint! Use paint to match the theme to make it an even more complete theme!
Christmas
Ornament Letters Sensory Writing! Make a fun sensory alphabet activity using letter cards with a sensory bag. The bag is filled with hair gel, food coloring, and pom poms! Check out my post on how to make a sensory bag. Practicing writing letters is always more fun when you use a sensory bag that is squishy and sparkly.
*Tip: Give students a pom pom to write with so they don’t tear the bag open.
Valentine’s Day
Heart Letters Read Build Write! Make a sensory bin with fake flower petals for a cute Valentine’s theme! Preschool, pre-k, or kindergarten students can pick a card, then build it with play dough or small manipulatives. Lastly, they will write the letter. I put my Read, Build, Write mats into a wipe and write pocket for durability and to make it work for dry erase markers.
St. Patrick’s Day
Shamrock Letters Stamp the Letters! Stamp the letters is an engaging alphabet activity for little learners. They will pick a letter card and then stamp the letter on the worksheet. Add a bit of extra fun by placing the letter cards on a tray with mini erasers, pom poms, or any other manipulative to match the theme of the activity. Easter
Bunny Letters Writing Tray! Create a sensory bin with dyed salt. Check out my post for directions to dye salt here. Students will grab a letter card, then write the letter in the salt. They can use a paintbrush, pom pom, or their finger to write the letter in the tray. Lastly, they will trace the letter on their worksheet.
Earth Day
Earth Letters Write the Room! Play a game of Write the Room to get students moving and learning at the same time! Before the activity, place the letter cards around the room. During the activity, students will walk around the room with a clipboard, mini pencil, and worksheet. When they find a letter card, they will write the letter on their worksheet.
U.S.A. (this can be used for 4th of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and President’s Day)
Flag Letters Hide and Seek! Have students practice putting the letter cards in alphabetical order in a pocket chart. When they find a letter, they can trace it on their worksheet. Students can also practice spelling sight words, names, or vocabulary words in the pocket chart.
