To help you find the best books for our Community Helper’s theme for October, I have created a book list full of engaging books for your students to read and explore. Teaching kids about the different roles of community members helps them understand how everyone in the community has an important job. This includes everyone from the doctors to the garbage collectors. It also gives us the opportunity to ask kids what kind of community helper they would like to be when they grow up. Some may want to become a mechanic, others a teacher or doctor.

Pizza at Sally’s
Sally makes the best pizza in town. She wouldn’t be able to make such yummy pizza pies without the tomatoes she grows in the garden, or the flour from the mill, and the cheese from the store down the road.
Truck Driver Tom
Delivering supplies to towns around the country is an important job. This book gives an inside look at how truck drivers deliver goods to different towns. As Tom travels along he points out other cars and trucks that are making deliveries too.
Mr. Cookie Baker
Kids love learning about the cookie baker because they make such sweet treats! As Mr. Cookie Baker pulls the cookies out of the oven, he is greeted by some very hungry and eager children.
A Day in the Life of a Doctor
Getting an inside look at a doctor’s day can ease fears and anxiety about a trip to the doctor. With real pictures and simple descriptions, kids can rest easy that a doctor is there to help them when they get injured or sick.
Whose Tools Are These?
Identify the person who uses the tools that are pictured. It’s time to get those thinking caps on…. some of these can be tricky!
Whose Hat Is This?
This book runs in the same series as the book listed above, but this time around we get to identify the person who wears the hat in the picture.
Whose Vehicle Is This?
Now it’s time to guess who vehicle this belongs to. Could it be a fireman, or maybe the mail carrier?
Whose Hands Are These?
Kids can guess whose helping hands they belong to. From teachers to the police, we all use our hands to help one another. This book shows kids how everyone works together in the community to lend a helping hand.
A Day in the Life of a Veterinarian
Exploring the day of a veterinarian shows kids how a vet cares for animals.
Police Officers on Patrol
With colorful text full of different siren sounds, this book shows kids how police officers help. From fixing a broken traffic light to helping a lost kiddo find his way home.
Keeping You Safe
This is another good book to have on hand to teach kids about the importance of police officers in a community and how they keep everyone safe.
I’m Brave!
A bright red truck, full of water, and a very long hose is the star of this book. It is full of rhyming text and silly words to get preschoolers excited about the job of a fire engine.
Places in My Neighborhood
Use this book to help kids identify homes, shops, the fire department, and more. Kids will be able to relate to the neighborhood in the book by finding familiar buildings.
I Want to be a Mechanic
When cars and trucks break down, the community relies on the local mechanic to get everything up and running again. This book gives kids an easy to understand explanation of what being an honest and helpful mechanic looks like.
Farming
A farmer’s job never ends. He has a lot of responsibilities to provide for the people in town. From growing food to raising chickens for eggs, a farmer works from sun up to sun down to help produce everything a community needs.
Delivering Your Mail
The mail carrier delivers mail even when it is raining or snowing. This book is great to share with preschoolers because it shows them that no matter what hurdles we face, a job still needs to get done.
I Stink!
Another great community book that is full of rhyming clues. The biggest clue is that this loud truck stinks! Kids get a kick out of all the things you can find in the trash. It also goes to show kids that no matter how stinky collecting garbage can be, it is still an important job to get done in the community.
ABC Dentist
This book breaks down a visit to the dentist into the ABC’s. Each letter is used to describe everything you find at the dentist including the equipment, all aspects of dental hygiene, and the staff members that work at the dentist office.
Amazing Airplanes
Follow the animals as they take a plane ride and learn about the terminal, how a plane flies, and even the air terminal.
Going to the Doctor
Use this easy to read book to teach preschoolers what happens when you take a trip to the doctor. I like this book because it doesn’t mention the word scary, which can bring on unnecessary fears.
ABC of Jobs and Career Day
The ABC’s are used to name jobs around the community. From an airline pilot zookeeper, kids will learn that there are many jobs in the community.
Road Builders
Community helpers that pave roads use some heavy duty equipment including cement mixers and bulldozers.
Construction
Building a library takes a lot of work. Watch the community helpers come together to build a place everyone in the community can enjoy.
Emergency
When there is an emergency in the community, loud sirens blare and lights flash. Although this can be scary for some, it is a sign that help is on the way.
Trashy Town
Mr. Gilly is a community helper that picks up the trash in town. He always does it with a smile on his face and with the help of his big truck.
These community helpers books for little learners have an abundance of information for preschoolers. Through these books, they can learn how a community works together to provide services and goods to everyone in the community. Now they will be able to identify the different jobs everyone takes care of in their own town.
