Writing Center Ideas
The writing center in my classroom is always busy. My Preschool students are always creating cards, writing letters to their families, drawing pictures, making books, and copying words at their own level. Students are scribbling, writing random letters, and some are sound spelling.
The writing center is an amazing place for students to learn about letters and sounds in a purposeful and meaningful way. My students are always interested in how to write the words MOM and DAD (grandma and grandpa too). A student may be making a card for their mom and want to write the word mom on the outside of the envelope. When a mom sees the letter his or her child made for her with the word mom on it, it melts her heart, and the child will know what he or she wrote was important!
To support students with this, I put a pocket chart by the writing table. I can put word cards in the chart for students to use as a reference in their writing. I know what you are thinking, Preschoolers writing…no way, right?! YES, they are writing in their own Preschool way! Scribbling and writing random letters is the first stage of writing! Even if a child takes out the word card and just scribbles, it is meaningful to them, and it should be just as meaningful to us too!
We want to build confident writers who LOVE to write! Celebrate those scribbles because eventually, those scribbles will become letters, and those letters will become words!

Fun Writing Tools: crayons, glitter crayons, metallic crayons, twistable crayons, markers, skinny markers, scented markers, colored pencils, highlighters, and pens
Writing Supplies: envelopes, white paper, colored paper, notepads, post-its, hole punches, shape punches, tape, scissors, glue, clipboards, alphabet charts, family word cards, student name cards, and themed word cards
Writing Supplies & Manipulatives: letter lacing beads, cookie sheers, play dough, letter stamps, chalkboards, magnet letters, dry erase boards, clipboards, letter stickers, and letter tiles
Don’t think word cards are only for writing. There are so many more activities you can do with them in your classroom! Here are a few more of my favorites!
