This will be my twelfth year teaching, and I have done student portfolios each year. Parents love them. I love them. But they are a TON of WORK! After trying many different ways of doing portfolios, I have developed a way that highlights a student’s growth and also is easy for me to organize throughout the year.
Assessment Binder Sections with Activity Pages & Charts
Skills assessed include: Identifies Letters (uppercase & lowercase), Identifies Letter Sounds, Rhyming, Writing Samples, Sight Words, Journals, Opposites, Positional Words, Identifies Numerals, Identifies Shapes (2D & 3D), Counting (rote and one-to-one correspondence), More/Less, Sorting, Patterns, Identifies Colors, Name Samples, Pencil Grasp, Drawing Shapes, Writing Letters, Writing Numbers, Cutting (lines, shapes) and Self Portraits.
Teacher Instructions & Ideas: Each section has a “teacher tips” page that explains the assessment options, tips, items needed and a photo to ensure it will go smoothly for you in your classroom.
Student Activity Pages: I created activity pages that I have used in my classroom and have worked well for my students. If you have different work samples or artifacts, absolutely add them to the portfolio to show a student’s growth and skill! Here are a few examples (choice 3 & 4 in the photo above)
Charts: Some teacher like to use charts to assess so I also included them as an assessment choice in this product! I put all my charts into a binder! Here are a few examples (choice 1 & 2 in the photo above)
Rubrics: SOCIAL EMOTIONAL, GROSS MOTOR & FINE MOTOR rubrics have been added! Super duper excited about this section. Just observe your little learners and check the boxes!
All About the Student Portfolios
Portfolios are a great tool to use at parent-teacher conferences. You can show the families where the student began, where they are now and where they are going. It is also a fabulous keepsake to send home at the end of the year to show how much the student has grown!
Assembling the Portfolio Binders: I broke the portfolios up into sections. You pick what sections you want to include! I created dividers for each section. There are simple dividers or the dividers with development levels. I print my dividers on colored card stock. This way the sections stand out more and are easier to find. For example, last year all the student portfolio dividers were copied on yellow card stock.
Covers: I have included tons of cover choices! You can print them on colored card stock, or my favorite special touch is to have the students color them. You can also select the editable ones. Your choices are endless!
Did I mention I added EDITABLE binder covers, dividers and more for you too?
Dividers: Two sets of dividers are included. The first set is just simple, general dividers (Math, Writing, Fine Motor). The second set of dividers are more specific, and it only has the name of the section.
And drumroll, please…. EDITABLE observation pages! Just type, insert the photo and print!
I think this might be my favorite part: Individual Student Skill Sheets with Matching Progress Reports (2 pages, 1 page if you copy it front to back) – You can track each students’ individual skill level ALL year long on just two pages!
The individual student sheets and portfolio activity pages/charts have the letters, numbers and shapes in the same order. These are also editable to make it super easy for you!
You can assess students’ progress as much or as little as you want. You have the freedom to decide what works for you in your classroom! I asses students the first month of school then again each quarter (every 2/3 months).
